A lot was talked about Josh Bell‘s draft experience at the time. He was a first round talent who had a very solid commitment to Texas and made it clear to MLB teams he did not want to get drafted. The Pirates ultimately drafted him in the 2nd round in 2011, threw a ton of money at him ($5 million), and he decided to forego college. The signing eventually was the straw that broke the back in the draft’s slotting system as the next CBA made it virtually impossible for a team to do what the Pirates did with Bell ever again.
He talked with Buster Olney about the entire experience and it is certainly worth a listen.
