Ramon Cabrera Video Recap – 7/28

When it comes to catching prospects in the Pirates’ system, everyone immediately thinks Tony Sanchez…as they should. However, there is someone who is less well-known who people should also include in the catching conversation. That guy is Ramon Cabrera.

Cabrera was signed as an International free agent in 2008 out of Venezuela and has held his own and then some at every level he has been at since. So far this year as a 21 year old in the Florida State League, he is hitting at a very impressive .352/.423/.465 clip. The power is still lacking as he has just 1 homer, but he’s hit 17 doubles, which matches a career high and squared the ball up better than anyone else I saw for Bradenton in the game I watched.

He went 2 for 4 with a double with his double coming in his 1st AB and a single coming in his 3rd AB. Here are all 4 AB’s:

Adalberto Santos Video Recap – 7/28

Adalberto Santos was the Pirates’ 22nd round pick out of Oregon State in last year’s draft. He signed quickly and was sent to State College to begin his professional career. There, he hit the ball extremely well, which should be expected from a 22-year old college draftee. In 63 games for the Spikes, Santos hit .319/.406/.479 with 3 homers and 7 triples to go along with 17 stolen bases in 24 attempts.

The Pirates were pretty aggressive with Santos this year as they sent him to High-A Bradenton to start the year. Santos has been a pleasant surprise thus far and is hitting .313/.395/.468 with 4 homers, 6 triples, and 20 stolen bases. It’s been a big year for Santos as he has really propelled himself into “prospect” status as he is putting up very solid numbers as a 2B/OF and is now at more of an age appropriate level. However, being 23, he really can not afford to suffer any setbacks or his prospect status will really drop. But so far, so good for Santos. Hopefully he will finish off the season strong and make a successful jump to AA-Altoona next year.

Unfortunately for me, and for all of you, Santos went 0 for 4 in the game I attended. However, you can still get a chance to see each of his at-bats here:

Pirates sign 37th rounder Rodarrick Jones

Pirates Prospects reported today that the Pirates have signed their 37th round pick Rodarrick James. James is an outfielder from Southern College.

Compared to other college draftees, Jones looks to be more of a project as he is not quite as polished as his peers. However, he is very athletic and is very toolsy. It looks like he will start out in the GCL, which tells you a lot about where he is at as almost no college draft picks are sent there.

With the signing of Glasnow and Jones today, the Pirates have now signed 20 players from this year’s draft.

Pirates sign 5th rounder Tyler Glasnow

Jim Callis of Baseball America reported today that the Pirates have signed their 5th round pick Tyler Glasnow. Glasnow’s signing bonus will be $600,000, which is the largest bonus given out to anyone in the draft after the top 65 picks.

Glasnow is a RHP from Hart High School in California and had a commitment to Portland. Here’s what Baseball America has to say on Glasnow:

Tyler Glasnow, a projectable 6-foot-7 righthander, comes from an athletic family. His mother was a gymnast at Cal State Fullerton and the gymnastics coach at Cal State Northridge, and his brother Ted is a decathlete at Notre Dame. Glasnow is still growing into his huge body, but he reportedly ran his fastball into the low 90s this spring, though scouts say his fastball ranged from 83-89 mph more often, sitting in the mid-80s. He flashes a curveball that has a chance to be average and the makings of a slider and a changeup, but he rarely uses the change. His command has a long way to go, and he is regarded as a high-risk prospect who could provide a high reward if he can harness his mechanics and command. He is committed to Portland.

Morton spins gem, but Bucs fall below .500

Final: Cubs 1, Pirates 0

LP: Chris Resop (3-3)
SV: Carlos Marmol (22)

Charlie Morton did what the Pirates needed him to do. Be a stopper. However, the Pirates’ bats were unable to muster up any type of support. And last time I checked, it is literally impossible to win if you do not score a run.

Morton did not give up a run over 7 shutout innings where he struck out 7 and walked 2. Chris Resop would make one mistake pitch to Starlin Castro and that would be the game as Castro led off the 8th inning with a home run that would prove to be enough.

The Bucs would get just 4 hits in this game, 2 from Pedro Alvarez.

The loss means the Pirates are below .500 for the first time in a while and it is getting to the point where they really need to right the ship before things get too out of control.
