Pirates’ injury updates

Published on June 14, 2011 by in Injuries

When will Pedro return?

The Pirates currently have 9 players on the disabled list. Let’s check in on them and see what their statuses are and when we can expect them back.

60-Day Disabled List:

Kevin Hart - Hart has been sidelined since receiving right shoulder surgery on a torn labrum in May of 2010. Hart suffered a set back this February when his shoulder flared up again, which forced him to start the year on the 60-day disabled list. He is now eligible to come off, and is currently making rehab appearances in Bradenton. The problem with Hart, though, is that when he is ready to come off the DL, there shouldn’t be a spot for him on the Major League club. He is out of options, thus would have to be DFA’d. He should clear waivers, though, so he can join the staff in AAA.

Ross Ohlendorf – Ohlendorf suffered a right shoulder posterior strain on April 8th in his 2nd start of the season. As of right now, Ohlendorf is still throwing bullpen sessions in Bradenton to rehab his shoulder. He is still about a month away at least and shouldn’t be expected until sometime late next month. Ohlendorf, most likely, will lose his spot in the rotation because of this injury. Jeff Karstens has replaced him admirably. The Pirates have 2 options here. They could put Ohlendorf in the bullpen and use him as a long reliever, or they could option him to AAA so he can keep his arm strength up as a starter in case he is needed at some point in the rotation. He does have 2 Minor League options remaining.

Chris Snyder – Snyder underwent surgery last Friday to repair a herniated disk in his lower back. The surgery was successful. However, Snyder’s season may be lost. If he does somehow make it back, it would not be until September.

15-Day Disabled List

Michael Crotta – Crotta was placed on the disabled list with right posterior elbow inflammation. He has begun throwing bullpen sessions and should be ready to come off the DL next month. Expect him to join Indianapolis’ bullpen, though, when he does come off.

Pedro Alvarez – Alvarez hit the DL on May 20th due to a tightness in his right quadriceps. He began playing in rehab games in Bradenton on June 1st and was hoping for a return shortly after. However, on June 7th, Alvarez was forced to exit a game because of his quad again. He has yet to begin playing in rehab games as he is still getting treatment. At this point, it doesn’t look like Alvarez will be ready until next month at the earliest.

Joe Beimel – Beimel went on the DL May 28th with medial epicondylitis in his left elbow (more commonly known as golfer’s elbow). He is supposed to start throwing bullpen sessions again this week and could be back within 1-2 weeks.

Steve Pearce – Pearce has been on the disabled list since May 30th due to a partial tear in his right calf. Pearce will be heading to Bradenton today to start his rehab there and will hopefully be ready to go in a week or two if all goes well.

Ryan Doumit – Doumit went on the DL the same day as Pearce (May 30th) due to a left-ankle fracture that was suffered during a home plate collision with Carlos Pena. He received a CT scan yesterday and it showed the ankle was healing as expected. If all goes well, Doumit should be ready late July.

Evan Meek – Meek was placed on the DL for the 2nd time this season on Friday with right shoulder inflammation. Dr James Andrews confirmed yesterday that nothing was structurally wrong with Meek and that his rehab will continue. The Pirates are hoping he will be fully healed by late-July.

Day-to-day

Josh Harrison – Harrison has be kept out of action the past 2 games due to tightness in his right oblique. He isn’t expected to swing a bat or throw until tomorrow. A decision will then be made if Harrison will need to go on the 15-day disabled list or not. If he does, prospect Chase d’Arnaud is among the top candidates to take his place.

Maholm shuts down Mets in 3-1 victory

Published on June 13, 2011 by in Game Recaps

Final: Pirates 3, Mets 1

WP: Paul Maholm (3-7)
LP: Mike Pelfrey (3-5)
SV: Joel Hanrahan (17)

The Pirates grabbed an early lead thanks to a leadoff single by Tabata to lead off the 1st. Then, on a gift call from 2nd base umpire Jerry Lane, Tabata was awarded 3rd base on a single by Xavier Paul due to “obstruction” from Jose Reyes. Tabata had been gunned by 2 steps at third base on a terrible base running decision, but was bailed out thanks to an awful call. Neil Walker would then single him in with a line drive to center field. The Pirates could not add on there, but in the end that wouldn’t matter.

Brandon Wood extended the Pirates’ lead to 2-0 when he hit a solo homer, his 2nd of the season, in the 5th inning.

Paul Maholm was spectacular as he tossed 7 shutout innings where he gave up just 3 hits and 2 walks. He lowered his season ERA to 3.12 and is in the midst of his best season of his career, despite just the 3 wins. He truly has pitched well, and is getting his way towards the Bucs picking up his $9.75 million option for next season. If not that, then he is putting the Pirates in a very good position come the trade deadline.

Jose Veras came on in the 8th and collapsed yet again with a leadoff walk, which was followed by a single. Tim Wood would relieve him and get Jose Veras to hit into a sacrifice fly double play (it was a weird series) and the 3rd out to keep the Bucs up 2-1.

The Pirates would then load up the bases in the 8th thanks to singles by Ronny Cedeno, Andrew McCutchen, and Jose Tabata. Neil Walker pushed in Cedeno with an RBI walk to add some insurance. McCutchen’s single was in his only AB of the game and extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

Joel Hanrahan would come in and pitch a 1-2-3 9th inning to pick up his 17th save in as many chances.

The Bucs finished up the 10-game home stand 6-4 and raised their season record to 32-33. They will now hit the road and face the last place Houston Astros in a 3-game series before heading into Cleveland for a weekend series of interleague play.

Pirates sign 10th rounder Taylor Lewis, 4 others

Published on June 13, 2011 by in Draft

Pirates Prospects is reporting that the Pirates have agreed to terms with their 10th round pick, Taylor Lewis.

Lewis, a CF from the University of Maine, was rated as the 5th best prospect by Baseball America in Upper New England. In college he was more of a line drive hitter and has the potential to develop some power down the road. I am assuming he will sent to State College shortly.

Also, with the announcement of the State College Spikes’ opening roster, we can also confirm the Pirates have inked 24th round pick Brian Sharp, 29th round pick Kirk Singer, 30th round pick Matthew Benedict, and 31st round pick Derek Trent.

Sharp and Singer are both college shortstops who should spit playing time with each other up the middle. Benedict is a college senior RHP, and Trent is a catcher, who also was a college senior.

These signings, along with the signing of 6th rounder Dan Gamache yesterday put the Pirates total at 6 signees from the 2011 draft, including 2 top 10 picks.

Pirates acquire Mike McKenry; DFA Wyatt Toregas

Dejan Kovacevic is reporting that sources say the Pirates have acquired Boston Red Sox catcher Mike McKenry.

McKenry, 26, was acquired by the Red Sox from the Rockies this spring and is currently hitting .280/.370/.430 in 28 games with AAA-Pawtucket. He was the Rockies’ 7th round pick in 2006 and has a career .811 OPS over 6 seasons in the Minors.

Based on his numbers, he seems to have decent pop in his bat, however his strength seems to be his defense. He has thrown out 36% of attempted base stealers in his career. Simply put, though, he will be an upgrade over Dusty Brown and Wyatt Toregas.

No word yet on what the Pirates have given up for McKenry, but I can not imagine it will be anything significant. Also, a corresponding move will have to be made here to create room for McKenry on both the 25-man and 40-man roster.

UPDATE – 11:53 PM:

It is now confirmed. The Pirates have, indeed, acquired McKenry. The Red Sox will receiver either a player to be named later or cash. Wyatt Toregas has been designated for assignment to make room for McKenry on both the 25-man and 40-man rosters.

Toregas’ stint with the club lasted all of 4 days. He played in 2 games and went 0 for 4 with a strikeout.

Pirates sign 6th rounder Dan Gamache

Published on June 12, 2011 by in Draft

Baseball America is reporting that the Pittsburgh Pirates have signed their 6th round draft pick, Dan Gamache. Gamache will receive a signing bonus of $125,000 and is the first player the Pirates have signed out of this year’s draft.

Gamache is known primarily as a defensive 3B. His numbers this season for Auburn were not all that impressive after his 2010 season was shortened due to surgery on his hand.

Most likely, Gamache will report to State College as they open up later this week.
