Alex Presley recalled; Pedro Ciriaco optioned

It’s now official. Alex Presley is free.

Earlier today, the Pirates optioned seldom used infielder Pedro Ciriaco and called up OF Alex Presley from AAA-Indianapolis.

Presley has definitely deserved his call up as he is absolutely raking AAA pitching in the International League. Presley burst on to the scene last season as he was named the Pirate’s Minor League Player of the Year where he hit .320/.373/.494 between AA-Altoona and AAA-Indianapolis. His performance earned him a September call-up, where he hit .261/.292/.304 in 23 AB. This year, he has picked up where he left off with a .336/.389/.500 with 8 homers and 18 stolen bases in 292 AB for Indy.

Presley will hopefully get ample playing time and opportunities to show if he can contribute at this level. Depending on the extent of Jose Tabata’s strained quad may present Presley with even more opportunity.

Pedro Ciriaco will return to AAA-Indianapolis and probably pick up more than 6 at-bats in a month. I still have no idea why he was on the roster this long.

Bucs drop series finale; Jose Tabata leaves game

Published on June 26, 2011 by in Game Recaps

Final: Red Sox 4, Pirates 2

WP: Andrew Miller (1-0)
LP: Tim Wood (0-2)
SV: Jonathan Papelbon (14)

Fortuately, I did not get to watch any of this game because it sounds like the Pirates pretty much gave it away. They made 4 errors that helped lead to 3 unearned runs against them.

Kudos to all the fans in Pittsburgh, though, as they actually broke last night’s attendance record with 39,511 people heading to the ball park today. Too bad they saw an ugly game. Bucs won the series, though, and finished the homestand 4-2. I will most definitely take it.

What is probably more important, though, is the fact that Jose Tabata left the game with an apparent left quad injury after legging out a bunt single to lead off the 1st inning. He actually needed carted off the field as he was unable to even get up from the ground. It is definitely not a good sign and it looks like a DL stint is in the very near future for Tabata. Tabata’s injury opens a door for Alex Presley to show what he can do with some regular playing time once he is called up.

Bucs sink Sox in front of record crowd

Published on June 25, 2011 by in Game Recaps

Final: Pirates 6, Red Sox 4

WP: Jeff Karstens (5-4)
LP: Tim Wakefield (4-3)
SV: Joel Hanrahan (22)

39,483 were on hand tonight as the Pirates set a PNC Park record for attendance. The Bucs gave them a show, too, as they won their 4th game in a row, and 2nd straight against the AL’s best team.

Jeff Karstens, as usual, did what he does. He was excellent through 6 innings while giving up just 2 ER. Clint Hurdle put hiim back out in the 7th inning and he gave up 2 solo homers and 2 outs before Daniel Moskos would close out the 7th by getting Adrian Gonzalez to fly out with a runner on 2nd.

The Pirates took the lead in the 4th inning and never surrendered it. Lyle Overbay must have read my post earlier in the day and launched a 3-run homer to put the Pirates up 3-2. Jeff Karstens would then single in Ronny Cedeno later in the inning to give the Pirates a 4-2 lead.

The Bucs would tack on another in the 5th when Andrew McCutchen hit a ground ball that went right through Dustin Pedroia’s legs to score Chase d’Arnaud to make it 5-2. In a 5-4 game in the 7th, Garrett Jones would add on some insurance with a solo homer and Joel Hanrahan would close it out for his 22nd straight save this year.

The win puts them at 39-37 and a game back of St. Louis for 2nd place in the NL Central. They remain 3 games back of Milwaukee. They’ll go for what would be an incredible sweep of the Red Sox tomorrow afternoon. James McDonald will take the mound against Andrew Miller at 1:35 PM. Bring out your brooms!

Pirates should inquire on Carlos Pena

Published on June 25, 2011 by in Features

This is my 4th year of running this blog. Never have I ever written a post about the Pirates trading for someone to improve their ML team. I’ve never really felt the need to. However, the Pirates are 75 games into this season, are in 3rd place, and just 3 games back of 1st place. It is no longer a foregone conclusion they will be sellers later this summer.

It is time the Pirates start looking into certain upgrades they can make in their club. Before anyone gets a little crazy, first let me say this: In no way, should the Pirates, at this point, do anything that will jeopardize their future by giving up one of their prized prospects. A team like the Pirates needs to continue to produce solid Major League players out of their organization, or these type of discussions never happen (see the last 18 years). However, with that being said, Neal Huntington has done an excellent job since arriving of acquiring depth at the Minor League level, so the Pirates do have some options.

Lyle Overbay is statistically ranked as the worst NL first baseman with a -0.7 WAR. His supposed “strong” defense isn’t showing as his -5.9 UZR ranks 3rd worst in the NL. ZIPS projects Overbay will hit .242/.326/.395 over the rest of this season, which is an improvement over his current .231/.308/.352, but is still pretty awful.

Carlos Pena is nothing special anymore. However, he is a vast improvement over Overbay, and shouldn’t cost too much in terms of a trade. He is hitting .225/.352/.446 with 14 HR and a 1.0 WAR. ZIPS projects Pena will hit .235/.361/.498 with 17 more HR the rest of the season. That is a pretty significant upgrade to what the Pirates currently have.

First, let’s talk about Pena’s contract situation. He is signed to a pretty weird 1-year deal. It is worth $10 million. However, $5 million of that will be paid to him in January of next year. Somehow, if a trade were made, that issue would need to be addressed.

Second, what would it take to get Pena? The Cubs blog Obstructed View has a pretty good breakdown of Pena’s trade value at this point that is worth a look. The Pirates could probable obtain Pena with an offer of 2 “C” prospects. To give you an idea, these would be guys ranked in the 15-30 range in the organization. Most likely, the players given up are capable of being ML players, but the odds of them being noteworthy are slim.

An upgrade at 1B is definitely something Huntington should be looking at right now and if the price is right, they should pull the trigger.
