  • Tony Sanchez broke jaw during offseason

Here’s the link to the story by Rob Biertempfel of the Trib.

I am not quite sure how I feel about this news.

Obviously it’s not good when your former first round pick, who is coming off a disappointing season because of breaking his jaw in 2010 goes and breaks his jaw again. And it also isn’t good when the reason for breaking his jaw this time is because he ended up on the wrong side of a bar fight.

However, the injury must have been far less serious than before, as it is now fully healed and doesn’t look like it will or has affected his development this time around.

This probably won’t help Sanchez, whose performance is already being scrutinized, in the court of public opinion. Let’s hope Sanchez comes out this year healthy and can regain his 2010 form so we can hear some good Tony Sanchez news for once.

  • 4 prospects earn top status from MLB.com

Jonathan Mayo from MLB.com recently released his top 10 prospects lists for each position. 4 Pirates’ farmhands made the cut.

When it came to naming the top 10 right handed pitchers, Mayo rated 2010 1st round pick Jameson Taillon #3 and 2011 1st rounder Gerrit Cole #6. Taillon is expected to start off the season for Bradenton in the Florida State League after completing his first full season last year at West Virginia. Cole put up a solid showing in the Arizona Fall League, but has yet to play any regular season ball. Expect him to also start out in Bradenton with Taillon.

The next Pirate to show up on Mayo’s list was Alex Dickerson, who was named the #9 first base prospect in baseball. Dickerson was the Bucs’ 3rd round pick last season and hit pretty well in the NY-Penn League, which should be expected. He’s got a great possibility of moving through the system quickly as a college bat. He will probably start off the year in West Virginia.

Lastly, Starling Marte was named the #7 outfield prospect in baseball following a year where he won the Eastern League batting title. Marte will get his first taste of AAA ball this year and if everything goes well, could see the big league club by the end of the year.

Also on the prospect front, John Sickels from Minor League Ball rated baseball’s farm systems 1-30. the Bucs came in at #12. You may not agree with some of the moves and the way Frank Coonelly and Neal Huntington have put together their Major League roster, but it’s hard to argue that they have done wonders with the system since they have taken over. This is a system that consistently was in the 25-30 range when lists like this came out. It’s not like that anymore.

  • Gerrit Cole set to make AFL debut Friday

Gerrit Cole, who was taken as the 1st overall pick in the 2011 Draft will make his Arizona Fall League debut on Friday for the Mesa Solar Sox against the Surprise Saguaros, according the AFL’s daily notes.

Cole made a few appearances in Instructional ball in Bradenton before heading out to Arizona earlier this week.

  • Robbie Grossman off to fast start in AFL

That’s what ESPN’s Keith Law said after Robbie Grossman homered today in the 2nd game of the Arizona Fall League season. So far in two AFL games, Grossman is hitting .556/.600/1.222 with 2 HR in 9 AB.

There’s been a lot said about Grossman recently as he was surprisingly left off Baseball America’s Top 20 Prospects of the Florida State League list. A lot of reports say that his stats are better than his tools.

Now, if you recently watched the movie Moneyball, then you would say to yourself that stats are all that matter. And in the end, stats really are all that matter. However, it is important to realize that not all stats that get put up in A-ball translate into success at the ML level. Just ask Brandon Wood.

It is nice, though, to see Grossman have success so far in the Arizona Fall League, as it is easily the highest competition that he has faced at this point in his career. His stellar year this season has propelled him up prospect lists and is now considered one of the better hitting players in the Pirates’ minor league system.

Hopefully Grossman keeps up his hot start in a hitter-friendly league and that will carry over to AA next season, where he will really be tested. By this time next year, we should have a pretty good handle on what we have in Grossman. At this point things are still up in the air. The guy has a lot of really good things going for him in his stats, he just needs to keep those up as he moves up the ladder.

  • Brock Holt wins Eastern League ASG MVP

2B Brock Holt became the second Pirates’ prospect to be named the MVP of his league’s all-star game Wednesday night as he started the scoring with a 2-run homer in the 2nd inning of the AA-Eastern League All-Star Game. Holt would finish the evening 1 for 2.

Starling Marte started in CF for the Western All-Stars and hit 2nd in the lineup. Marte ended up going 0 for 2 with a strikeout. It was Marte’s 2nd All-Star game this week after playing in the MLB Futures Game in Phoenix on Sunday.

LHP Jeff Locke pitched a scoreless 4th inning and RHP Aaron Pribinac pitched 2/3 scoreless and actually picked up the win in relief.

The other Pirate prospect to win an ASG MVP award this season was 1B Aaron Baker, who like Holt, went 1 for 2 with a 2-run homer in the Florida State League All-Star Game last month.

Holt is the 4th Altoona Curve player to win the EL ASG MVP award. The most recent Curve to win it was Chase d’Arnaud last season.

  • Pirates’ June Organizational Awards

    McCutchen hit .347/.447/.495 in June.

As we do every month, let’s take a look back at June to point out the top performers at each level of the organization.

The month of June saw the Pirates win 16 games, the most in a month since they won 17 in August of 2007.

This is also the first month that State College and the GCL Pirates appear on this list as they kicked off their seasons this past month. Neither State College nor the GCL Pirates played many games, so those clubs’ winners all come with a very small sample size.

    Pittsburgh Pirates

    Pitcher – Jeff Karstens

Karstens went 3-0 with a stellar 1.52 ERA over 6 starts this June. In 41 1/3 innings, which led the team, he struck out only 15 and walked 7. However, he only allowed 27 hits, which is good for a minuscule 0.82 WHIP.

    Hitter – Andrew McCutchen

‘Cutch led the club in BA (.347), OBP (.447), and SLG (.495). Hard to argue with those numbers. He also tallied 8 doubles, 2 homers, and stole 5 bases in 6 attempts.

    AAA Indianapolis Indians

    Pitcher – Garrett Olson

Olson quietly has been pitching extremely well this year for the Indians. In June, he made 5 starts and was 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA. Over 25 innings, he struck out 18 and walked 9 while holding opponents to a .145 batting average.

    Hitter – Matt Hague

Hague absolutely erupted in June and has burst on to the scene as a legitimate option for a Major League call up. He hit .402/.449/.645 with 5 homers and 11 doubles in 107 AB. He collected an extra base hit in each of his last 6 games of the month.

    AA Altoona Curve

    Pitcher – Jeff Locke

Locke was almost a shoe-in to be at AAA by this point, however he ran into some issues starting off the season and remains in AA. Hopefully he has turned the corner. In 6 June starts, Locke was 2-2 with a 2.30 ERA. In 31 1/3 innings, he struck out 32 and walked 13.

    Hitter – Starling Marte

As hot as Marte started the season, he has gotten better each and every month, with June obviously being his best. It would be nice to see Marte walk more as he only drew 4 walks all month, but there is no doubt he can hit. In 92 AB, he posted a line of .337/.378/.522 with 2 homers and 11 doubles.

    A+ Bradenton Marauders

    Pitcher – Brett Lorin

Lorin continued his solid year for Bradenton as he went 1-2 with a 1.71 ERA in 4 starts in June. He also was selected to participate in the FSL All-Star Game last month, as well. In 21 innings, he struck out 20 and walked just 4.

    Hitter – Robbie Grossman

Boy, this was a tough one as I have to give props to both Ramon Cabrera and Adalberto Santos also. A ton of players had excellent Junes for Bradenton. However, Grossman gets the edge here with his .341/.500/.495 line. A lead off hitter with a .500 OBP is obviously doing his job. Grossman also hit 2 homers, 8 doubles, and stole 4 bases in 5 attempts.

    A West Virginia Power

    Pitcher – Colton Cain

Cain’s first season in full season ball is going pretty smoothly and June was his best month so far. In 5 starts, he was 1-1 with a 2.17 ERA. Over 29 innings, he struck out 19 and walked 7. He held opponents to a .187 average.

    Hitter – Drew Maggi

Maggi finally looks to be getting in gear as he broke out in June with a .351/.439/.495 line over 97 AB. He homered twice, hit 2 triples, 4 doubles, and stole 7 bases.

    A- State College Spikes

    Pitcher – Matt Benedict

This year’s 30th round pick is dominating the NY-Penn League early on. Benedict went 1-0 with a 0.73 in 3 starts for the Spikes. In 12 1/3 innings, he has struck out 6 and has yet to walk a batter.

    Hitter – Samuel Gonzalez

The hitting has been pretty suspect to start the season for the Spikes, but Gonzalez has easily gotten off to the best start. Through 8 June games, Gonzalez hit .440/.448/.600 in 25 AB.

    R GCL Pirates

    Pitcher – Orlando Castro

This is the first year in the states for the 19-year old lefty and he’s off to a solid start with a 2.00 ERA in 2 June starts. Over 9 innings, he has struck out 12 and walked only 2.

    Hitter – Alen Hanson

Hanson is quickly making a name for himself and might be someone to keep an eye on to see if he can continue what he’s doing. The 18-year old, switch-hitting 2B from the Dominican Republic hit .400/.488/.800 in 35 AB. He has 2 homers, 2 triples, and 4 doubles to go along with 5 stolen bases in 6 attempts.

  • Pedro Alvarez begins rehab stint; Other moves

    - Pedro Alvarez has started his rehab assignment, which is excellent news. He started at 3B for the GCL Pirates today and will be re-assigned to the Bradenton Marauders to continue his rehab. Hopefully this means Alvarez isn’t too far off from rejoining the club.

    - Indian pitcher Rinku Singh has been promoted to State College from the GCL Pirates. 2011 draftee Jordan Cooper has been assigned to the GCL roster to take his place. Singh pitched in just one game in the GCL this season and pitched 4 scoreless innings with 5 strikeouts and no walks.

    - RHP Kevin Hart visited Dr. James Andrews today and has been told to focus on rehab the next month instead of pitching. That piece of news is for all those people who actually remembered Hart was still with the organization.

    - RHP Mike Crotta has been activated off the disabled list and optioned to AAA-Indianapolis. Crotta pitched in 10 2/3 innings out of the Pirates’ bullpen to start off the year and posted a 9.28 ERA with 7 strikeouts and 5 walks.

    - The Pirates acquired Minor League catcher Miguel Perez from the Washington Nationals for a player to be named later or cash. Perez played for Altoona and Indianapolis in 2008-2009 and will serve as minor league depth at catcher after Wyatt Toregas suffered an injury in AAA-Indianapolis. Catcher has been a problem this year to say the least.

    - Lastly SS Jordy Mercer has been promoted to AAA from AA-Altoona. The Bucs’ 2008 3rd round pick is showing a lot of pop for a middle infielder this year with a .267/.329/.487 with 13 homers in 265 AB. Mercer’s prospect status has taken a hit since being drafted, but an infielder with the power potential he possesses deserves a little attention.

  • Starling Marte selected to Futures Game

Altoona outfielder Starling Marte has been selected to play in this year’s MLB Futures Game played in Phoenix, AZ during All-Star week. Marte will play on the World Team. Chase d’Arnaud was originally selected, also, to play for the US Team, however, I assume he will take his recent call-up to the Majors over that honor any day.

Marte, 22, is in his first full year playing for Altoona and is having quite a season. He is hitting .338/.370/.477 in 266 at bats. Marte has shown for years that he has the talent, however, freak injuries have sidelined him. This will hopefully be his first full year of playing so we can see what he has over an entire season. Marte is a gifted athlete and scouts say his defense may ultimately push Andrew McCutchen out of center field once Marte arrives in the Majors.

The Futures Game will be broadcast on ESPN2 on Sunday, July 10th at 6 PM ET.
