After a breakout season in both Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis, the Pirates have officially called up OF Andrew Lambo. Alex Presley will be optioned to make room for him.

Lambo, who just turned 25 on Sunday, has hit .284/.350/.576 between the Curve and the Indians and his 31 home runs is tied for the most in all of Minor League Baseball.

Lambo was once a highly regarded prospect in the Dodgers’ system and was rated as the 49th best prospect in baseball prior to the 2009 season. He was acquired along with James McDonald in 2010 in exchange for Octavio Dotel. It took Lambo quite a bit of time to adjust to the high minors as he played in Double-A in parts of six different seasons. His development was also stunted due to a 50-game suspension after testing positive for marijuana and multiple injuries.

This season, however, Lambo seems to have put it all together and he has truly earned the right to be on the Major League club.

No corresponding 40-man move will need to be made as the Pirates already had an open spot.
