Gerrit Cole improves to 4-0 in 10-3 rout of Brewers

Final: Pirates 10, Brewers 3 (box)

WP: Gerrit Cole (4-0, 3.70 ERA)

LP: Johnny Hellweg (0-1, 27.00 ERA)

SV: Ryan Reid (1, 1.00 ERA)

50x50_t470I guess we will start with Gerrit Cole. He seemed like he was going to be in for a long day after allowing six of the first seven batters to reach base, leading to a three-run deficit to start the game. But he settled in quite nicely after that and didn’t allow a run the rest of the way as he finished up six innings. He picked up his fourth win in his fourth start of his career and became the first Pirate pitcher to do so since Nick Maddox in 1907. Yup. 1907. That was a long time ago.

50x50_t470As mentioned earlier, it seemed like we were going to be in for a long day, but then something glorious happened. Something called the second inning. An inning in which 12 Pirates made it to the plate and seven of them scored. It was highlighted by a two run double by Neil Walker, and some awful defense from Jean Segura. It was fun.

50x50_t470Ryan Reid finished the game off with three scoreless innings and was awarded with his first career save. Reid actually has been pretty effective thus far and owns a 1.00 WHIP and 1.00 ERA over his first nine ML innings.
