Final: Pirates 9, Rockies 6
This was the Coors Field we all grew up watching. Thanks to four long-balls, the Pirates offense picked up James McDonald, who gave up six runs in five innings.
Pedro Alvarez hit his second straight opposite field home run in the second inning to start the barrage for the Pirates. In the third inning, with the Pirates down 5-1, Garrett Jones hit a three-run homer to bring the Bucs within one. Rockies’ starter Jeremy Guthrie then allowed Casey McGehee to reach on an error, Pedro Alvarez to single, and hit Rod Barajas with a pitch to load the bases for Clint Barmes. Barmes delivered with a two-run single to right center as the Pirates put up a five-spot in the third inning.
McDonald allowed the Rockies to tie it up in the fourth inning, but the Pirates answered right back with a two-run homer by McGehee and a solo homer by Barajas, both in the fifth inning.
James McDonald has given up at least four runs in three of his last five starts, with today easily being his worst start of the year. In his last two starts, he has walked nine while striking out four.
