Joel Hanrahan and Andrew McCutchen named to NL All-Star Team

Published on July 1, 2012 by in Features

Major League Baseball announced the rosters for the All-Star Game, which will be held in Kansas City on July 10th. CF Andrew McCutchen and closer Joel Hanrahan will represent the Pirates.

McCutchen is among the NL leaders in just about every offensive category: .336 BA (5th), 15 HR (7th), 51 RBI (6th), 14 SB (9th), .993 OPS (6th). He’s a candidate for the league MVP, so his presence at the ASG was pretty much a given. It will be his 2nd appearance (’11) in the mid-summer classic.

Hanrahan joins McCutchen with his 2nd appearance (’11) in the ASG as well. Hanrahan’s 20 saves ranks 3rd among NL relievers and has converted a save in all but two of his opportunities. In 30 innings, he has a 2.10 ERA with a 35:15 K:BB ratio.

There are a few snubs that people will bring up as a strong case could be made that both James McDonald (7-3, 2.44 ERA) and A.J. Burnett (9-2, 3.31 ERA) are deserving of a roster spot. One or both still have a chance at making the team depending on how things play out with reserves and such.
