Baseball America: Pirates have four prospects in mid-season Top 50

Baseball America unveiled their mid-season Top 50 Prospects list. Four Pirates made the list with the fourth being somewhat of a surprise.

2011 1st overall pick, Gerrit Cole checked in on the list at #6, the highest rank of any prospect in the system. Cole was promoted to Double-A Altoona after making 13 starts for Bradenton in High-A. In 16 starts between the two levels, he is 7-2 with a 2.86 ERA and an 82:22 K:BB ratio in 78 2/3 innings.

Coming in at #15 was 2010 1st round pick, Jameson Taillon. In 16 starts for High-A Bradenton, Taillon is 5-6 with a 4.05 ERA. In 86 2/3 innings, he has a 73:24 K:BB ratio. Taillon started off the season hot with a 1.46 ERA in April, but then posted ERAs of 4.94 and 5.86 in May and June, respectively.

Starling Marte came in as the Pirates’ highest rated hitting prospect at #36. In Marte’s debut season at Triple-A, the 23-year old outfielder is hitting .289/.349/.494 with nine home runs and 11 triples. His 23 walks through 81 games is already more than he had all of last season (22) in Double-A.

The surprise on this list is that SS prospect Alen Hanson was ranked as the #40 prospect in baseball after not really being highly touted going into the year. His numbers are certainly impressive, however, with a .330/.391/.599 line with a whopping 15 home runs and nine triples for Low-A West Virginia.
