Rod Barajas scores from first base on bunt; Pirates win

Final: Pirates 4, Tigers 1

WP: A.J. Burnett (8-2, 3.24 ERA)

LP: Doug Fister (1-4, 2.72 ERA)

SV: Joel Hanrahan (18, 2.33 ERA)

You know things are going well when Rod Barajas, owner of a 4.5 40-yard dash (4.5 is in minutes, of course), somehow comes around to score from first base on a bunt.

With the Pirates already up 2-0 in the 2nd, Pedro Alvarez and Barajas hit back-to-back singles. A.J. Burnett then laid down a bunt. Fister tried throwing the ball to 3rd base, but it ended up in foul territory down the left field line. Delmon Young had some trouble corralling the ball and Barajas scurried home with an amazing head-first slide, that was totally not necessary. Here’s the video of the play, it’s worth a look.

The Bucs first got on board earlier in the 1st inning with an RBI single by Neil Walker and a GIDP by Garrett Jones.

A.J. Burnett pitched six scoreless innings to win his 7th straight start.

Andrew McCutchen continues to be on an absolute tear. He was 3 for 4 tonight and is now hitting .346/.402/.577. No Pirate has put up numbers approaching that since the Brian Giles days.

Pedro Alvarez had another good game going 1 for 2 with an intentional walk. One thing that is nice to see along with the hot hitting is Pedro’s walk rate go up. It is now at 9.2%, which is the highest I can remember it being all season.
