Pirates claim Oscar Tejeda; DFA Doug Slaten

It’s pretty amazing that the Pirates have cut ties with two left-handed reliever in two days, but I guess that just shows how much they thought of them. Yesterday, Daniel Moskos was DFA’d to make room on the 40-man roster for Eric Fryer. Now today, Doug Slaten is gone to make way for 22-year old Oscar Tejeda.

Tejeda was DFA’d by Boston and has struggled throughout his time in the minors. He was once thought of as a pretty decent prospect when he was younger, and was even given a pretty healthy $525,000 signing bonus out of the Dominican Republic at age 16.

He hit pretty well in High-A ball at age 20, but once he hit Double-A, he hasn’t been able to put things together. So far this year for Portland, Boston’s Double-A team, he is hitting .262/.294/.396 with five home runs.

He is still just 22 years old, and I guess it doesn’t hurt to just take a flyer on someone like Tejeda because it really doesn’t cost the Pirates anything to try. I don’t have much faith based on the past two seasons that he will develop into someone who can contribute at the Major League level, but who knows? Weirder things have happened.

Tejeda will be assigned to Altoona.
