Pirates agree to terms with 2nd rounder Wyatt Mathisen

Published on June 10, 2012 by in Draft

Pirates Prospects is reporting that the Pirates have agreed to terms with their 2nd round pick, Wyatt Mathisen. No word yet on the bonus amount, but Mathisen slot is valued at $746,300.

Mathisen is a prep catcher who was rated as the top catcher in the high school ranks entering the draft. He had a commitment to play for the University of Texas, but will apparently turn that down to follow in the footsteps of his fellow former Texas commits (Robbie Grossman, Colton Cain, Josh Bell). Speaking of which, Texas baseball fans must really hate the Pirates.

I would expect Mathisen to start his pro career in the Gulf Coast League later this month.

Jim Callis of Baseball America reports that Mathisen has agreed to sign for $746,300, which is exactly the slot value of the pick.
