Andrew McCutchen and A.J. Burnett help finish up series sweep

Final: Pirates 3, Royals 2

WP: A.J. Burnett (6-2, 3.61 ERA)

LP: Bruce Chen (5-6, 4.44 ERA)

SV: Jason Grilli (1, 1.50 ERA)

The final score of this one could have read: “Andrew McCutchen 3, Royals 2″ but I decided against it. But that’s pretty much what this game was.

A.J. Burnett didn’t allow a hit until the 6th inning and lasted 7 1/3 innings giving up just two runs on five hits. He was pretty much on cruise control throughout the entire ball game until the 7th inning.

The Pirates first scored in the 1st inning when Alex Presley scored on an Andrew McCutchen double to right center field. The other two runs came on a 2-run laser beam of a home run by McCutchen in the 3rd.

Jason Grilli closed things out in the 9th inning for his first save of the season. Joel Hanrahan had pitched the previous three days, so he was deemed unavailable for this one.

Today was the first time in a while in which the bullpen wasn’t lights out. It took three pitchers to record the final five outs, but they were able to get the job done looking “off.” So I’ll take it.

Andrew McCutchen entered this game 0 for 17 lifetime against the Royals. He is no longer 0 for 17 lifetime against the Royals.

With the win, the Pirates have won 12 of their last 15 games and are currently a half game behind Cincinnati, who plays Detroit tonight on Sunday Night Baseball. Let’s go Tigers.
