Final: Pirates 9, Indians 2
A.J. Burnett had yet another solid start as he, and the Pirates’ offense, were able to end the club’s four game losing streak.
Cleveland scored first with an Asdrubal Cabrera homer in the first, but the Pirates quickly responded when Pedro Alvarez tied it in the 2nd with his 9th home run of the season and first since May 27th. The Bucs would take the lead in the 3rd when Neil Walker, Andrew McCutchen, and Garrett Jones would hit back-to-back-to-back singles.
Burnett relinquished the lead in the 5th inning when Casey Kotchman hit a solo home run, but the Pirates would score seven unanswered runs, highlighted by Casey McGehee, Alex Presley, and Pedro Alvarez homers.
The win by Burnett was his 6th win in his last six starts. The last Pirates pitcher to accomplish that feat was Doug Drabek in 1990. Ever since his 12 run outing against St. Louis, Burnett’s ERA is 2.19.
Casey McGehee was 2 for 4 with a home run, a walk, and four RBI. Going into today, he was hitting .375/.474/.656 in 32 June at-bats. His OPS has now climbed up to .713 from .521 on June 1st.
Pedro Alvarez‘ two home runs gave him ten on the season. It was his first multi-HR game since July 10, 2010. The Pirates are now 7-2 in games Pedro goes deep.
