McDonald, McCutchen power Bucs past Nats

Published on May 17, 2012 by in Game Recaps

Final: Pirates 5, Nationals 3

WP: James McDonald (3-2, 2.68 ERA)
LP: Jordan Zimmermann (2-4, 2.58 ERA)
SV: Joel Hanrahan (8, 3.29 ERA)

James McDonald was just straight dealing tonight. He pitched five no hit innings and ended the night giving up three runs in 5 2/3 innings with 11 strikeouts.

Andrew McCutchen started things off in the 1st inning with an opposite field home run and the Pirates would never relinquish the lead. Rod Barajas hit a 2-run homer in the 4th and McCutchen added another solo shot in the 6th to give the Bucs a 4-0 lead.

James McDonald has struck out at least seven batters in each of his last five starts. He struck out 10 or more in two of those starts. In other words, he’s been awesome.

Rod Barajas was 3 for 4 with his 3rd home run. He is now on a five game hitting streak and has four extra base hits during that span.

Andrew McCutchen entered today’s game hitting .439 with eight home runs in his career against the Nationals. He was 2 for 4 with two homers today. The guy is on fire this month, too, hitting .442/.510/.860 over his last 13 games.

Josh Harrison got the start at shortstop tonight after a 2 for 4 performance last night where he hit his first homer of the year. Tonight, he helped spark some things at the bottom of the order going 2 for 3 with a double.
