Errors, long ball doom Pirates in 10-7 loss

Published on May 1, 2012 by in Game Recaps

Final: Cardinals 10, Pirates 7

WP: Adam Wainwright (1-3, 6.75 ERA)
LP: Charlie Morton (1-2, 4.22 ERA)
SV: Jason Motte (4, 3.12 ERA)

The Bats were working today, but the gloves were not. The Pirates committed a season-tying high four errors and gave up three home runs to fall to the Cardinals 10-7.

Charlie Morton started and ended up giving up six runs (five earned) over 4 1/3 innings. St. Louis would add four more runs off relievers Jared Hughes and Tony Watson, only one of which was earned.

Jose Tabata and Pedro Alvarez both hit 2-run home runs for the Bucs. Garrett Jones added a 2-run single and Alvarez would knock in another run with a single in the 8th inning.

After not scoring over five runs in any game this season, the Pirates accomplished that feat for the second straight game. They have scored 16 runs in the past two games. It took them nine games to accomplish that run total to start the year.

Brad Lincoln pitched a 1-2-3 8th inning of relief. Clint Hurdle has said that Lincoln may be moved into a more back-end of the bullpen role now that Evan Meek has been sent to AAA. So far, Lincoln has a 1.13 ERA over eight innings with nine strikeouts. It is hard not to really like his stuff out of the bullpen.

Pedro Alvarez went 2 for 4 with his 6th home run of the season tonight. He has recorded multiple hits in five of his last nine games and has raised his batting line to .222/.258/.571.
