Tim Williams reported today that RHP Tim Alderson was promoted from AA-Altoona to AAA-Indianapolis. Everyone knows Alderson as the highly regarded pitching prospect who was acquired in the Freddy Sanchez trade in 2009. At the time of the trade, Alderson was ranked as the #45 prospect in all of baseball.
There have been quite a few bumps in Alderson’s development since that trade as his velocity on his fastball had reportedly dipped into the low 80’s. Things are starting to look promising for the 23-year old. His velocity is back in the 90’s and he pitched seven scoreless innings to start off the season for Altoona with eight strikeouts.
Today, he made his AAA debut and pitched three scoreless innings with three strikeouts and a walk.
It is only ten innings this season, so it is still too early to get overly excited and say that Alderson is “back” as a top prospect. But it sure would be nice if kept taking steps in that direction. He is still young enough to develop into a useful pitcher. In fact, he is now the youngest player on the Indianapolis roster, which is quite amazing considering he was in AA for parts of 4 different seasons.
