Missed opportunities, walks doom Pirates

Final: Braves 6, Pirates 1

WP: Tommy Hanson (3-2, 3.00 ERA)

LP: A.J. Burnett (1-1, 1.38 ERA)

SV: Kris Medlen (1, 1.42 ERA)

Once again, the Pirates offensive woes play a big part.

A.J. Burnett pitched great in six innings of work. He struck out eight batters and gave up two runs. Tony Watson and Evan Meek could not get things done in the 7th inning and the game was essentially out of reach at that point.

The Pirates’ only run came on an RBI single by Garrett Jones following an Andrew McCutchen single and stolen base.

There were a total of five walks given up by Pirates pitching tonight. Four of those players walked ended up crossing the plate.

Alex Presley was 2 for 4 and extended his hitting streak to 11. Both hits were infield singles, which seems to be the case for just about all of Presley’s hits.

Pedro Alvarez was 0 for 2, but drew two walks, giving him three on the season. If you saw his at-bats tonight he looked like a totally different player. He was actually recognizing pitches and laying off balls out of the strike zone. I’m seeing improvement. Hopefully it continues.
