Jeff Karstens pulled after first inning with shoulder inflammation

Published on April 17, 2012 by in Injuries

Jeff Karstens was removed from tonight’s start after giving up two runs in the first inning. He batted in the top half of the 2nd but did not go back out to pitch.

The Pirates’ Twitter page states that Karstens was pulled from the game due to “inflammation in his right shoulder” and will be evaluated when the team returns to Pittsburgh. More information will be made available on Thursday afternoon after he sees the team doctors.

Karstens was making his 3rd start of the season and had a 3.27 ERA in 11 innings through his first two starts. Last year, Karstens had a breakout season where he posted a 3.38 ERA over 162 1/3 innings.

Shoulder injuries are usually very, very bad. Hopefully this is nothing but a “sore shoulder” or something. If not, it could be pretty bad news.
