Bats shut down again in 4-1 loss

Final: Cardinals 4, Pirates 1

WP: Lance Lynn (3-0, 1.42 ERA)
LP: Charlie Morton (0-1, 3.60 ERA)
SV: Jason Motte (3, 1.50 ERA)

The game started off very promising as Alex Presley launched the first pitch off Lance Lynn off the center field wall. Skip Schumaker went crashing into the wall and Presley sped around the bases for an easy inside-the-park home run [video]. The Pirates didn’t score after that.

Charlie Morton pitched well, but was very inefficient. Over five innings, Morton struck out six and gave up two runs, only one of which was earned.

The Cardinals led 2-1 for the majority of the game as neither team was able to get anything going for quite a while. However, the Cards finally broke things open in the 9th inning with two runs off Jared Hughes.

The Pirates committed four errors today that led to two unearned runs scored by the Cardinals. Clint Barmes committed two throwing errors, Neil Walker bobbled a routine grounder, and Charlie Morton did not step on first base while covering a ground ball to first base. Just can’t do those things against good teams.

The Pirates 6-7-8 hitters from today’s game have a batting average of .237…if you add up all their averages. They were 0 for 9 with four strikeouts.

Evan Meek pitched a 1-2-3, five-pitch 6th inning. He has looked pretty sharp his last two outings.

Jose Tabata was 2 for 4, his first multi-hit game of the season.
