A.J. Burnett spectacular in Pirates debut

Final: Pirates 2, Cardinals 0

WP: A.J. Burnett (1-0, 0.00 ERA)
LP: Jake Westbrook (2-1, 1.31 ERA)
SV: Joel Hanrahan (2, 3.60 ERA)

It looked like Burnett’s Pirates debut was going to be a disaster. He walked his first batter, then gave up a single, and then walked a batter to load up the bases in the first inning with nobody out. He followed that up, though, with two strikeouts and a line out. St. Louis would not be able to get anything else off Burnett as he ended up pitching seven scoreless while striking out seven batters. It was all you could have hoped for.

The Pirates offense did not do much, but two guys carried the lineup. Andrew McCutchen was 2 for 4 with a double and scored twice. Both times ‘Cutch scored, it was on an RBI single by Pedro Alvarez, who was also 2 for 4.

Juan Cruz, Tony Watson, and Jason Grilli combined for a scoreless 8th inning and Joel Hanrahan shut the door in the 9th for his 2nd save of the season.

After the game, Burnett stood outside the Pirates locker room and shook the hand of everyone on the team before entering in. Classy dude.

In games Tony Watson has come in, there have been a total of 10 base runners already on base. None of those 10 base runners have scored.

I need this hat.
