Well this is a surprise.

Apparently tonight’s scheduled starter, Kevin Correia, is experiencing discomfort in his side and has been scratched. A.J. Burnett, who was scheduled to make his final rehab start at AA-Altoona tonight will instead take the mound tonight against the Cardinals.

Tom make room for Burnett on the active roster, Jared Hughes has been optioned to AAA. Hughes had posted a 2.08 ERA over 8 2/3 innings so far this season.

Burnett was acquired by the Pirates back in February from the Yankees and unfortunately suffered an injury the first week of spring training when he fouled a bunt off his eye. He has made two rehab starts between Bradenton and Indianapolis and was scheduled to pitch around 100 pitches today before joining the club the next time through the rotation.

No word yet on the seriousness of Correia’s injury. He will take the day off tomorrow and see if he can go on Monday or not. If he is unable to start Monday, Brad Lincoln will take the hill instead.
