Final: Blue Jays 7, Pirates 1
WP: Kyle Drabek (1-0, 0.00 ERA)
LP: James McDonald (0-1, 9.00 ERA)
It’s spring training, and this is the first game of that, so look at the results as you will. But there are a few notes that I took out of this game that are worth mentioning.
Gorkys Hernandez is the reason why the Pirates weren’t shut out. In the 5th inning, with 2 outs, he singled, stole second, and scored on a Michael McKenry bloop single. Starling Marte doubled in the 9th. Those were the Pirates’ only 3 hits.
Chris Leroux gave up a home run to Eric Thames on the first pitch of the bottom of the 5th. He then struck out the next 3 batters.
Tony Watson gave up 4 hits and 3 runs in the 6th inning. He also hit a batter. Brad Lincoln and Chris Resop each pitched a scoreless inning of relief. James McDonald, the starter, gave up 2 ER on 2 hits and a walk. Daniel McCutchen gave up 1 run on 2 hits and a HBP. Ryota Igarashi pitched a perfect frame while striking out a pair.
Nick Evans and Jake Fox, two players fighting for a bench spot went 0 for 2 with 2 K’s and 0 for 3 with a K, respectively.
Josh Harrison drew a walk. He only did that 3 times all of last season.
