Pirates crush O’s

Published on March 5, 2012 by in Game Recaps

Final: Pirates 10, Orioles 3

WP: Jo-Jo Reyes (1-0, 0.00 ERA)
LP: Brian Matusz (0-1, 13.50 ERA)

A lot of good things happening in this one.

Matt Hague, who Clint Hurdle has aptly named “The Hit Collector,” went 3 for 4 with a 2-run homer [video] off Kevin Gregg in the 3rd inning.

Alex Presley went 3 for 3 with a triple [video], 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored. Looked pretty good. He hit everything pretty hard and his speed played a big role on a few plays.

Starling Marte got the start in RF. He was 3 for 3 with a stolen base and 2 runs scored. He did, however, make one of the worst errors I’ve ever seen on a routine fly ball that he just simply missed. I don’t really know how to describe it because it was so odd.

There were a few starters who struggled. Pedro Alvarez went 0 for 3 and struck out without seeing a ball in his first 2 at bats. Gorkys Hernandez went 0 for 3 with 3 strikeouts after getting the nod in CF. Michael McKenry also went 0 for 3 and left 5 men on base.

A couple of the “replacements” played fairly well later in the game when everything was already decided. Robbie Grossman was 1 for 3. Quincy Latimore went 2 for 2 with a triple. And Tony Sanchez was 1 for 1 with a single and a walk.

Josh Harrison. Walked. Again. That’s 2 in 2 games played, folks. He had 3 last season. Maybe he watched Moneyball. He also had an RBI double [video].

Jo-Jo Reyes started and looked very Jo-Jo Reyes-y. Let’s hope we don’t have to use him much this year. Justin Wilson pitched 2 hitless innings while striking out 3. Jared Hughes, Bryan Morris, Michael Crotta, and Tim Wood each added a scoreless inning of their own.
