Pirates president Frank Coonelly charged with DUI

Dejan Kovacevic reported today that Pirates president Frank Coonelly has been charged with four counts related to drunk driving in Ross Township on December 22nd.

Coonelly’s blood-alcohol was .16, twice the legal limit for Pennsylvania.

“My actions that evening were irresponsible and wrong,” Coonelly said in a statement. He arrived this morning in Bradenton, Fla., to join the Pirates at their spring training complex.

“I take full and sole responsibility for them. There is no excuse for ever driving under the influence of alcohol.”

I think we all know that this is a pretty serious issue and driving drunk is an inexcusable offense.

The other saga to this story is that Deadspin is saying that it is confirmed that 93.7 The Fan have instructed their talk show hosts to not discuss the DUI on the radio. Dejan Kovacevic tweets that the Pirates have nothing to do with The Fan’s silence.

I discussed this a little in the podcast earlier tonight┬áthat I can understand The Fan’s decision. I mean, what kind of conversations are you going to have on a DUI?

Caller: Yeah, I think driving drunk is stupid.

Host: I would agree with that.

Caller: That’s all. Let’s go Steelers.

Seriously, though, it has been reported by multiple outlets, there really isn’t much to discuss. Fielding calls on people’s thoughts about someone driving drunk just doesn’t really make sense to me, and quite frankly, would make for some awful radio.

UPDATE – 10:28 PM:

Looks like the “silence” is over.
