Pirates sign Erik Bedard to 1-year deal

The Pirates finally seem to be getting in the swing of things as they inked LHP Erik Bedard to a 1-year contract worth $4.5 million. It is a relatively low risk, high reward situation in that IF Bedard can stay healthy (and that is a big if), he has shown he is still very capable of pitching at a high level.

Bedard started 24 games last year as he hit the 20 game mark for the first time since 2007. In 129 1/3 innings, he posted a 3.62 ERA and struck out 8.7 batters per 9 innings. Bill James projects him to strike out 8.78 batters per 9 innings this season and post a 3.54 ERA. Bedard certainly is capable of being the ace of this staff if all goes well. In fact, his 2.4 WAR from last year’s 24 starts is higher than any Pirates’ starter last season.

There really is absolutely nothing to complain about in this deal. Let’s just hope he stays healthy.

To make room for Bedard on the 40-man roster, the Pirates designated catcher Jason Jaramillo for assignment.
