The Pirates’ Twitter account announced this evening that the Pirates have acquired infielder Yamaico Navarro from the Kansas City Royals for 2009 2nd round pick, RHP Brooks Pounders and infielder Diego Goris.
Navarro is 24 years old and has played in 42 ML games between the Red Sox and the Royals and was the Red Sox’ 12 ranked prospect heading into the 2011 season. He looks to be an upgrade to the recently DFA’d Pedro Ciriaco and should compete this spring for a spot as a backup infielder on the Major League club.
Brooks Pounders is coming off a season where he posted a 3.68 ERA over 66 innings at Single-A West Virginia. Pounders was mostly used out of the bullpen where he struck out over a batter per inning.
Goris just finished up his 4th season in the Dominican Summer League at the age of 20. He had a very solid season with a .898 OPS, but that should be expected from a 20-year old playing at that level.
