Daniel Moskos tweeted that the Pirates have called up both Jeff Locke and Jared Hughes following Indianapolis’ season finale.
Locke was looked at as perhaps the main piece in the Nate McLouth trade which also brought Charlie Morton and Gorkys Hernandez into the Pirates’ organization. The 23-year old lefty was 7-8 with a 4.03 ERA in 125 innings for AA-Altoona before being promoted to AAA last month. He finished the season off very strong with the Tribe going 1-2 with a 2.22 ERA in 28 1/3 innings where he struck out 25 batters and walked only 9.
Jared Hughes will also join Locke as a 1st time big leaguer. Hughes, like Locke, started off the year in Altoona, but was promoted to AAA and joined Indy’s bullpen, where he really excelled. In 42 2/3 innings out of the Indians’ bullpen, he posted a 2.11 ERA and struck out 45. Hughes, 26, is a bit older than Locke, but could have a future in the Pirates’ bullpen.
I think it’s also safe to assume that Moskos, who broke the news, will also be joining Locke and Hughes, and I’m sure there will be a few position players called up as well (Fryer, Alvarez).
