Kristy Robinson has reported that LHP Tony Watson has just arrived in the Pirates’ clubhouse and will take Paul Maholm’s spot on the 25-man roster after Maholm was placed on the disabled list last night with a shoulder strain.
Watson has pitched in 26 1/3 innings thus far out of the bullpen for the Pirates and has looked pretty good posting a 2.73 ERA and 23 strikeouts compared to 12 walks.
Watson was optioned to AAA earlier this month in an effort to bring some rested arms to the bullpen in the midst of the Pirates’ long losing streak.
The Pirates could sure use the help as Joe Beimel was the only lefty option the Pirates have had lately out of the bullpen.
It will be interesting to see if this means that Brad Lincoln will take over Maholm’s spot in the rotation. Another option is to keep Lincoln as a reliever until Maholm’s next scheduled start on Tuesday and send him down for Ross Ohlendorf.
