The Pirates traded reliever Tim Wood to the Texas Rangers today for cash or a player to be named later. Wood was designated for assignment this past week in order to make room for Ross Ohlendorf.
In 8 innings with the Pirates, Wood walked 8 and struck out 2 with a 5.63 ERA. I wouldn’t expect anything significant in return for Wood and it will probably end up being just cash.
The move is, though, a pretty big blow for the AAA-Indianapolis Indians, who are fighting for a playoff spot, as Wood served as the team’s closer. He was rather effective in that role as he posted a 2.84 ERA over 44 1/3 innings with 23 saves. He will have to be placed on Texas’ 40-man roster, but has been optioned to AAA-Round Rock.
