Final: Pirates 1, Reds 0
WP: James McDonald (6-4)
LP: Mike Leake (8-5)
SV: Joel Hanrahan (28)
The Pirates’ offense was virtually non-existent in this one. Luckily for the us, though, the Reds’ offense was literally non-existent.
James McDonald was superb pitching 6 1/3 scoreless frames while racking up 7 strikeouts. He left in the 7th, though, in quite a jam that the bullpen would remarkably get out of. With the bases loaded, and one out, Joe Beimel came on in relief of McDonald to face pinch-hitter Jay Bruce. Beimel fell behind Bruce 2-0 but came back to strike him out swinging. 2 outs. Chris Resop would then come in to face Drew Stubbs, who weakly grounded out to 1st on the first pitch he would see.
Resop would then go on to pitch a 1-2-3 8th inning.
The Pirates’ l0ne run would come in the 1st inning as Josh Harrison would hit a 1-out single and would move to third on Neil Walker’s book-rule double. Andrew McCutchen would then drive in Harrison, and the deciding run on an RBI ground out to short.
The Pirates go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon at 12:35 as Jeff Karstens takes the hill against Johnny Cueto.
In other news tonight, Pedro Alvarez went 4 for 4 tonight for AAA-Indianapolis and is 9 for his last 12, including 2 homers. Hopefully this is a sign he is finally ready. Ronny Cedeno was 3 for 4 with a double. And Steve Pearce was 1 for 4 with a double. Cedeno and Pearce should be back with the club for this weekend’s series and having Pedro back (hitting) would be a nice treat as well.
