Pirates’ offense erupts in 10-2 win

Published on July 3, 2011 by in Game Recaps

Final: Pirates 10, Nationals 2

WP: Kevin Correia (11-6)
LP: Jason Marquis (7-3)

This one was over pretty early. The Bucs got on the board quickly as an error and 4 singles helped them score 3 runs in the 1st inning. In the 2nd, they piled on another 5 runs, all by singles and doubles.

Washington would get 2 runs in the 2nd inning off starter Kevin Correia, but that would be all they would get as Correia would finish with 6 innings and pick up his 11th win of the season. Danny Moskos added 2 scoreless innings of relief, and Chris Leroux pitched a scoreless 9th inning after being called up to replace Brad Lincoln on the roster earlier today.

Andrew McCutchen, Neil Walker, and Lyle Overbay all had 3 hits a piece and Alex Presley and Chase d’Arnaud would add on 2 a piece. The Pirates’ 1-6 hitters combined to go 14 for 30. You will win a lot of games when that happens.

The win gave Pittsburgh the series split against Washington and finished yet another successful road trip with a 4-3 record. They now are 43-41 on the season and will come back to PNC tomorrow to start a 3-game set against the last place Houston Astros, which will be followed by a 3-game set against the 5th place Cubs at home. The Pirates really need to take advantage of these upcoming series’ before the All-Star break and do some damage in the standings.
