Bucs take 1st game of double header 5-3

Published on July 2, 2011 by in Game Recaps

Final: Pirates 5, Nationals 3

WP: Jose Veras (2-2)
LP: Sean Burnett (3-5)
SV: Joel Hanrahan (24)

James McDonald once again failed to go 7 innings, but he certainly was effective over 6 1/3 innings. He gave up 2 runs and struck out 7 batters before giving way to Jose Veras, who would pitch 1 2/3 scoreless innings to bridge the gap to Hanrahan.

The Pirates opened up scoring in the 1st inning when Garret Jones singled in Chase d’Arnaud. Jones would also come around to score thanks to an Andrew McCutchen double and a Neil Walker sacrifice fly.

It was a 2-2 ball game heading into the 8th inning after Rick Ankiel homered off McDonald in the 7th, but the Bucs answered right back. Garrett Jones and Andrew McCutchen hit back-to-back homers to give the Bucs a 4-2 lead. Matt Diaz would also collect an RBI single later in the 9th inning to give the Pirates some insurance.

Hanrahan would give up 1 run in the 9th, but the game was never in doubt after that.
