Alex Presley leads Pirates to extra inning win

Published on July 17, 2011 by in Game Recaps

Final: Pirates 7, Astros 5

WP: Chris Leroux (1-0)
LP: Mark Melancon (5-3)
SV: Chris Resop (1)

Alex Presley came in to this game 1 for 9 for the series. He definitely made sure to end it on a good note, though, as he basically carried the offense with his 3 for 6, 3 RBI performance.

Kevin Correia also deserves a lot of credit, too, as he had a huge 2-run double in the 2nd inning. Correia, on the mound, would finish with 3 runs given up over 6 innings.

Jeff Keppinger continued to give the Pirates fits as he went off going 3 for 5 with a homer and a double as he played a huge role keeping the Astros in this one.

Jose Veras had his 2nd consecutive sub-par outing as he was able to get only 2 outs in the 8th inning before handing the ball over to Joel Hanrahan for a 4-out save with a runner on 1st base. Chris Johnson, though, would provide an RBI double off Hanrahan to tie up the game, handing him his 1st blown save of the season. Hanrahan would follow that up with a 1-2-3 9th inning.

The Bucs would get 3 runs in the 11th inning thanks to 2 errors by the Astros, a passed ball, and Alex Presley.

Chris Leroux picked up his first career win and Chris Resop picked up his 1st career save.

This is definitely a huge win and an important series to win. These next 2 weeks will go a long way in deciding the season, too as the Pirates now play 13 games against the Reds, Cardinals, Braves, and Phillies to close out July.
