How sweep it is!

Published on June 16, 2011 by in Game Recaps

The Bucs completed a 3-game sweep over the Astros.

Final: Pirates 5, Astros 4

WP: James McDonald (5-4)
LP: Jordan Lyles (0-2)
SV: Jose Veras (1)

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to watch much of this game, but from the looks of the box score and the summary, it looks like James McDonald once again did not have his best stuff. He labored through 5.2 innings while giving up 7 hits and 4 walks. Somehow, though, he gave up just 3 runs, though to keep the Bucs in it.

Garrett Jones got things off to a good start with a 3-run homer in the 1st inning. However, the Bucco bats would not be able to get anything going again until the 6th inning, when they scored 2 runs thanks to an error by Michael Bourn that scored Andrew McCutchen and an RBI double by Josh Harrison.

Tony Watson came on in relief of McDonald and threw 2 scoreless innings and Travis Wood would retire the final batter in the 8th inning to bridge the gap to Jose Veras. Joel Hanrahan was not available for this one after pitching in 3 consecutive games before today. Veras would give up a single and a stolen base. After a groundout, a single would put the game within 1. However, Veras would get both Hunter Pence and Carlos Lee to groundout to pick up his first save of the season.

Andrew McCutchen went 1 for 2 with a walk and a HBP that would have extended his hitting streak to 15 games. However, the Mets appealed the ruling on a double McCutchen got this past weekend and it was changed to an error, thus ending the streak. As if you didn’t have enough reasons to hate the Mets.

The Pirates’ win puts them at 35-33 on the season and was their 4th time raising the jolly roger in as many days. They will head up to Cleveland this weekend for a 3-game set against the “rival” Indians.
