Rob Biertempfel is reporting that the Pirates have signed their 22nd round pick, Mike Jefferson out of Louisiana Tech.
Jefferson, 21, is a left-handed pitcher who went 6-4 with a 3.56 ERA his junior year this past season. He seems to have some control issues as he walked 46 batters in 86 innings. He also struck out 70.
Here is what WTM from Pirates Prospects had to say on Jefferson:
Jefferson was the ace of the Louisiana Tech staff, as he made significant progress with the control problems he’d had in his first two years. He also cut way down on gopher balls, possibly with some help from the new bats. He’s never allowed a lot of hits. Baseball America ranked him the 32nd best prospect in Louisiana. He has a 90-91 MPH fastball and a good curve. He was drafted by the Mets in 2010 in the 46th round, but returned to school. He redshirted in 2008 and so has another year of eligibility left, but signed with the Pirates and should report to State College.
Jefferson becomes the 9th player signed by the Pirates from the 2011 Draft.
