Bucs hold on; Win 3-2

McDonald danced his way through 6 innings.

Final: Pirates 3, Mets 2

WP: James McDonald (4-4)
LP: R.A. Dickey (3-7)
SV: Joel Hanrahan (16)

One thing I always like to see from a starting pitcher is how he handles a start when things obviously are not going well for him. James McDonald gave up 8 hits, 3 walks, and only struck out 2 batters through 6 innings. He looked as bad today as he has all season. Yet, he was able to get out of jams and give up just 2 runs to keep the Pirates in this one. Now, that is not something I want to see from McDonald often, but I will take that kind of performance when he looks awful.

After McDonald gave up a run in the 1st, the Pirates answered back in the bottom of the 2nd as Garrett Jones drove an RBI double into the North Side Notch to score Neil Walker.

The Pirates would add 2 more runs in the 3rd inning on a “double” by Andrew McCutchen that would score 2 runs. Cutch’s “double” was a hard hit ground ball that bounced off the leg of Mets’ 3B Daniel Murphy into foul territory. The hit extended McCutchen’s hitting streak to 10 games.

Travis Wood relieved McDonald in the 7th inning and looked really good to hold the Pirates lead to 3-2. Tony Watson and Jose Veras would make things interesting in the 8th, but the Mets still were unable to score. In the 9th inning, the Mets had no shot at all as Joel Hanrahan pitched an easy 1-2-3 innings to pick up his 16th save of the season.

The Pirates will look to get back to .500 tomorrow in the rubber match of the series. Game time is 1:35.

Hey – could you shoot me an email? For some reason I don't have yours (at least I can't find it – gah), and I wanna axe you a question or two.
