Alex Presley recalled; Pedro Ciriaco optioned

It’s now official. Alex Presley is free.

Earlier today, the Pirates optioned seldom used infielder Pedro Ciriaco and called up OF Alex Presley from AAA-Indianapolis.

Presley has definitely deserved his call up as he is absolutely raking AAA pitching in the International League. Presley burst on to the scene last season as he was named the Pirate’s Minor League Player of the Year where he hit .320/.373/.494 between AA-Altoona and AAA-Indianapolis. His performance earned him a September call-up, where he hit .261/.292/.304 in 23 AB. This year, he has picked up where he left off with a .336/.389/.500 with 8 homers and 18 stolen bases in 292 AB for Indy.

Presley will hopefully get ample playing time and opportunities to show if he can contribute at this level. Depending on the extent of Jose Tabata’s strained quad may present Presley with even more opportunity.

Pedro Ciriaco will return to AAA-Indianapolis and probably pick up more than 6 at-bats in a month. I still have no idea why he was on the roster this long.
