I was in Cincinnati all weekend and unable to get to a computer until now, so here are some things that have been going on:
- The spring roster is down to 53 players after the first two rounds of cuts. Only 28 more to go to. On Sunday, the Bucs sent pitchers Ronald Uviedo and Ramon Aguero down to minor league camp, along with outfielders Brandon Jones and Gorkys Hernandez and infielders Argenis Diaz and Brian Friday. Jones, Diaz, and Friday were sent to AAA while Hernandez, Uviedo, and Aguero were sent to AA.
- The second round of cuts came yesterday as Brad Lincoln and Donnie Veal were sent to AAA. Bryan Morris, who is putting together a solid spring campaign was sent to A+ Bradenton along with 1st rounder Tony Sanchez. Virgil Vasquez, Jeff Sues, and Justin Thomas were also all assigned to minor league camp.
- I think you can count Delwyn Young as a virtual lock now for a bench position. Young has been blasting balls this spring and has easily seperated himself from the rest of the pack of those fighting for a spot. That leaves one bench spot remaining, which will most likely be given to either Brandon Moss or John Raynor.
- So much for downplaying Bryce Harper. It seems like the kid is legitimate. Check out his season stats so far. Then look at them again and realize the kid is playing college ball, at 17, with a wooden bat. In 80 AB so far, he's hitting .413/.510/.850 with 8 homers. If he keeps that up, I will be praying for the Nats to pass on him.
