Pirates to sign Bobby Crosby

Rob Biertempfel reports that the Pirates and SS Bobby Crosby have reached an agreement, pending a physical. Dejan Kovacevic says the deal is hearing that it is a one year deal worth about $1.5 million.

Since the signing is pending a physical, it could be a while before we hear official news on the signing, but all signs point to the fact that Crosby will be a Pirate in 2010.

To give some background information on him, Crosby was once a highly regarded prospect after being chosen in the 1st round of the 2001 draft by Oakland. In 2004, Crosby was named the American League Rookie of the Year after blasting 22 homers in his first full season.

However, it then started to go downhill for Crosby, who will be 30 next season. He has played over 100 games just once since that rookie season due to countless injuries and his production has suffered. He now sits with a career line of .238/.305/.378.

He is a bit better than the Pirates current shortstop, Ronny Cedeno, and if he stays healthy, might be a strong candidate for a bounce back season.

It is a good pickup in that it adds some infield depth, however, most likely it will not be considered a major signing.
