Time to cast my ballot for the BBA NL Rookie of the Year. First off, let me say I didn't vote for any pitchers (Happ, Hanson, etc.) because I simply don't think they mean as much for their team as position players do. Both Happ and Hanson had great seasons, but in order for me to put a pitcher's performance over that of an everyday starter, their numbers better be amazing.
3) Andrew McCutchen - Pittsburgh Pirates
Out of all the rookies in this year's class, I think McCutchen has the brightest future. The season he was able to put together at age 22 was pretty good, but not good enough to win ROY. He may have been the "Most Valuable Rookie," but he wasn't the best. The sky is the limit for McCutchen and I think the Bucs have something pretty special with him.
2) Chris Coghlan - Florida Marlins
Coghlan's .850 OPS ranked 3rd among NL rookies and his .320 batting average led all rookies in the majors. Coghlan also led all rookies in doubles, runs scored, hits, and OBP. At 24 years old, Coghlan should be patrolling the outfield in Miami for quite some time.
1) Garrett Jones - Pittsburgh Pirates
Despite being called up in July and having registered just 314 AB, Jones led all rookies in home runs with 21. His .938 OPS was so much higher than any other rookie that it is ridiculous that he probably won't win this award. In fact, that .938 OPS was the 9th best in the entire National League placing him right in front of Ryan Braun and Ryan Howard. No other rookie's season can even be compared to Jones' this year.
