Thursday Notes: One...More...Day

Sorry about getting this post up a little late. I had a job interview this morning. So real life had to take a front seat to blog posts...

- It seems like forever since the Pirates last played. They are off, once again, today. Even though they were playing terrible before the break, I still miss it. Good thing we got a game tomorrow.

- Didn't get this up earlier, but Tyler Yates had successful Tommy John surgery on Tuesday. To my knowledge, no one even knew he was going to have it outside of him, the doctors, and the club, so it came as bit of a surprise. What this means is you will never see "Flood Gates" Yates on the hill again in a Pirates uniform. Hopefully Yates makes a quick and full recovery. This is his 2nd TJ surgery and I wish him the best of luck.

- The Top Prospect list continued today with #3 Jose Tabata.

- Brian from Raise the Jolly Roger reviews his opening day expectations.

- Lastings Milledge homered twice yesterday for High-A Lynchburg. Makes one wonder how much longer it will be before we see him in black and gold.

- The Yankees are looking at Ian Snell. Interesting.

- In our "Bryce Harper Standings Watch" today, Washington, San Diego, Cleveland, and Oakland are all in action. It would be nice for all of them to win so we can gain some ground.

- To go along with the Bryce Harper Standings, check out this week's poll question.

Just wanted to say the pirates drafted the best catcher avaible and know it was not sanchez. schoenfeld looks like Bo Jackson in a uniform, he hits for power, average and runs a 6.4 60. He is twice the player Sanchez is. SO give up on Harper he will never play for the pirates.Joey and harper play on the same travel team, Harper plays short when schoenfeld is there. end of story. u guys have a star and dont even know it. pete rose

From what I have read and know about Joe Scheoenfeld, it's that he is still very raw. His athleticism is superb and is the sole reason for him even being drafted.

His .303/.412/.505 line in high school isn't all that great, but the potential is definitely there.

Schoenfeld is still 6 years or so off of making a difference at the ML level. Harper is about 2 years away.

I really hope we sign Schoenfeld as he seems like someone who has tons of potential, so I'm really interested to see how the negotiations go.

However, just because we have Sanchez and/or Schoenfeld doesn't mean that I/we can't still want Harper.

Thanks for the post. Have you seen Schoenfeld/Harper play in person? I'm curious to learn a little more about Schoenfeld. Basically what I just wrote is really all I know.

Jim, I have seen Schoenfeld and harper. Harper is a freak. Schoenfeld is the real deal.By the way those stats are not even close for Schoenfeld. I coached against him in league. he Hit 448BA. 11 Doubles, 5 homeruns 3 triples, 20 stolen bases.and thats all by piching around him.Harper hits off speed better than Schoenfeld. Joe hits fastballs better. I seen him hit matt hobgoods 95mph about 450 feet. Joe accounted for all of Hobgoods earned runs. all by HR'S the rumor is he is raw is so false. because of his speed all the scouts want him in the outfield. His pop is 1.8. I hope the pirates come to terms soon. He is about to announce he staying home for college. If thats the case he will be a first rounder in 5 years. Sorry for the bucs.

Ryan, I greatly appreciate the words.

Like I've said, it is kinda hard to find info on Schoenfeld, so I was just going by what I know and what I could find.

Hopefully he is someone the Bucs can sign, however I really have yet to hear anything on that front.

I would imagine that with a strong commitment, he is going to want a bonus above slot, and I'm not sure if the Bucs will offer that.

Also, if they were to offer him bonus money above slot, MLB would try to keep that info on the down low so no one else can use it as leverage in other deals.

We probably won't know for sure until August 15th or a few days before what's going to happen with Schoenfeld.
